(SWEET BAY MAGNOLIA) Slow growing small tremor multi-stemmed shrub, eventually 15-20’ (larger in the south); glossy oblong leaves are semi-evergreen. Waxy flowers mid spring to summer are creamy white, cup shaped and sweetly citrus scented, followed by red seeded, cone-like fruits in fall. Easily grown in acidic, moist to wet soils (even clay) in sun to part shade and tolerates soggy, boggy sites. A good choice for rain gardens, lawns, near patios, woodland edge, adjacent to ponds or streams.
