Mandragora autumnalis
Mandragora autumnalis
(Mandrake) Botanists disagree on whether this is truly a different species than M. officinarium or if it is merely part of this variable species. This rare nightshade has history! Prior to Harry Potter, it was called ‘Sacred Herb’, ‘Witches Herb’ and ‘Devil’s Apple’ and is mentioned in the Bible. It has a large tap root that is said to have a human form (but don’t look because its scream can kill you). Forms a cool clump 1’ tall by 2’ wide of bold leaves, purple spring flower clusters followed by yellow fruits. Goes dormant in summer or if stressed. Plant high, rich drained soil in sun to light shade. Toxic. Magical! Limited supply.
